Smartphone Software - iConvert for iPhone/iPod Touch

iConvert, by Future Apps, is a clever application for the iPhone that makes it easy to convert from one unit of measurement to another. This little app does an impressive job of converting on-the-fly and it can handle a wide range of conversions. These include length, weight, area, time, currency, speed, temperature, and more.

iConvert by Future Apps

Note: Since by definition "smartphones" are phones that are also PDA's, the software reviewed here should work with personal digital assistants that are not "smartphones". Check the operating system because I'll be reviewing software for Windows Mobile, Palm, iPhone, and BlackBerry devices. -- Editor

iConvert, by Future Apps, is a clever application for the iPhone that makes it easy to convert from one unit of measurement to another. This little app does an impressive job of converting on-the-fly and it can handle a wide range of conversions. These include length, weight, area, time, currency, speed, temperature, and more. I've tried a number of other conversion applications, but I like the format used by iConvert best. Take a look at the screen shot. All you do is put in the number that you want to convert, so in this example I put in "1". Next, you pick the type of conversion you want to do, like temperature, weight, and so on. I picked length. Then, as you can see in the screen shot the columns below give you a huge range of "length" items to pick from. I picked mile on the left side and then picked kilometer on the right side. My conversion is immediately shown down below as 1 mile equals 1.609344 kilometers. What's really cool about iConvert is that you can scroll to other selections and the program instantly shows you the conversion. So, for example, while leaving my main choice I could scroll the right-hand column and find out that 1 mile also equals 1,760 yards, 0.8689762 nautical miles, 63,360 inches, and so on. I love the fact that I don't have to navigate through multiple screens to get the answers I want. I also think the way the program is laid out is brilliant. As I've described I can get multiple conversions by just scrolling to another selection. Very nicely done. In fact, I like iConvert so well that it's not only a Pick, but I'm also making it a Dr. File Finder Favorite and in 26 years of evaluating software there aren't very many of those. So, check out iConvert of yourself. I recommend it and I bought it for the lovely price of ninety-nine cents.
